Yesterday evening saw racing return to Birr for the first time in I don’t know how many years when Wolftrap CC hosted the JJ Kinehan Birr Criterium. JJ, a Birr man, was a national champion and held multiple national and international  tt records (I think) in the earlier part of the 20th centuary. Back to 2010 and to promote cycle racing, this criterium was organised as part of Birr’s Vintage Festival that was taking place all week.

From Tuesday August 3rd onwards, the Tuesday and Thursday spins will leave Athlone Sports Centre car park from the new time of 6pm. Usual distance is 60km.

If you’re looking for a cycling challenge this weekend then there are a number of cycling tours taking place. The first one is Wolftrap CC’s (Birr) Billy Butler Cycle which takes place on Sunday August 1st. As Wolftrap are a neighbour and co-organiser of the MIL, I would encourage SSCC members to partake in this cycle over any others this weekend. I took part in this event last year and reckon it was the most enjoyable and well organised cycle I was on last year. The cycle starts from Birr Rugby Club at 9.30 sharp with sign-on from 8.30am – motor bike marshalls, support vehicle, lunch en route and refreshments and T-shirt at the finish.   The  entry fee is €20 and 130km and 50km are available.

Also on Sun Aug 1st is the 5 County Challenge and Tour of Clare. And if you can only get out on Saturday then Marble City CC are organising the Tour of Kilkenny. Details of these 3 events can be found under UPCOMING EVENTS on the right side of this page.

Well done to Mark Nestor who took 1st place yesterday evening in Mount Temple on what turned out to be a glorious evening for bike racing.  The results of round 11 and overall GC of the Buckley Cycles Midland Interclub League are now available in RACING -> MIL RESULTS.
