Nine Shannonsiders made it over to Multyfarnham for the 8am start of the first ever Midlands Meander 200k Audax. An Audax is a particular type of spin; usually long distance, with small enough entries, a €5 sign-on fee an minimal backup. You are issued with a card (a Brevet) which is stamped at points along the route as evidence that you completed the event.
On an overcast evening in Birr, the sun shone for our newest star Slam-On who took an impressive fourth place in the CD race.
Having started from the industrial estate with our usual handicap, the D group worked well together, with almost everyone taking their turn up front. The route took us out to Clareen and briefly on to the Kinnitty road, before turning back towards Killyon. The end of the first lap saw a few cracks beginning to form. Monty decided to go back and check on the C group behind. A few more turns up front and Click was next to buckle and he too went back to check on the C group.

While some of the Shannonside riders took to a wet and overcast tour of Sligo, two Shannonside riders travelled down to the opposite part of the country to a sunny Clonmel, to take part in the Kilurney School Cycle. We decided to avoid Sligo, as I have a “secret” winter training camp there in January. Continue Reading →
Last week. I had a call from The Coach. He is a guy I used to ride with when I lived nearer to civilisation; one of the infamous ‘Plonquers’. It was cryptic stuff. ‘I will be going for a cycle with a ‘girl’ on Bank Holiday Monday, from the Sheraton’. He asked could I pick some routes, 80k long and include a hill or two, but ‘she’s new enough to cycling’. I said yes and we talked on. eventually, he said ‘Come along if you like’ but I was wondering at this stage how slow it would be.
After the success of last year’s event, Shannonside CC are again honoured to host the 2nd round of the Invacare Ireland – Paracycling Time Trial League in Athlone on the 11th May 2013. Sign on is at AIT from 9am-11am and the race starts at 12pm at the Birr turn on the old Dublin Rd. A work shop for new and developing cyclists will also take place from 3pm-5pm at the collage. All cycling abilities welcomed and catered for on the day. This event is taking place alongside a National Paracycling Training camp so members of the elite squad will be on hand for tips and advice.
